Finding Porcelain Crowns in San Francisco

Dental crowns provide a reliable, permanent treatment for many serious dental problems involving decay, fractures, or even missing teeth when combined with bridgework or dental implants. A crown or tooth cap refers to a porcelain covering that is custom-made to encase the entire tooth section above the gums, restoring a damaged or weakened tooth to its original shape, size, strength, and appearance.

There are different types of crowns. But porcelain (tooth-colored) crowns are the most common because of their close resemblance to natural teeth. Porcelain veneers are strong, highly durable, and easy to customize to match the size, shape, and shade of your original teeth, giving you a natural, beautiful smile that lasts for many years.

The Procedure

Your teeth must be prepared before the crown can be placed. Depending on your case, Dr. Quimson will remove all the decay, as well as a small amount of tooth structure while reshaping the tooth to ensure that the crown fits properly between the other teeth.

Next Dr. Quimson will take an impression of the tooth and send it to a dental lab where it will be used to fabricate your custom crown. You will have to bite down a mold filled with dental putty to create the impression. This process takes 2-3 weeks.

To avoid sensitivity and prevent any damage to the prepped tooth, Dr. Quimson will place a temporary crown until the permanent crown is ready for placement on your second appointment.

Who needs a Crown?

Dr. Noreen Quimson may recommend a porcelain crown to protect and strengthen the tooth structure of a severely broken or fractured tooth that cannot be sufficiently restored with fillings because it would be too weak.

Dental crowns can also be used to:

  • Restore decayed teeth
  • Support tooth bridge replacing missing teeth
  • Strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Replace large or fractured fillings
  • Replace missing teeth with dental implants
  • Improve the shape, size, and appearance of teeth as a cosmetic treatment
